Indian Wastefield

Hundreds of families from the lowest caste are working on the garbage dumps surrounding the cultural capital of India.

They build their villages at the feet of giant mountains of garbage and work inbetween infectious waste, bulldozers, wild hogs and crows in order to collect plastic and precious metals from the remains of throw-away society. By selling these commodities they forge a livelihood and sustain their families.

As soon as the children’s bodies are big enough for this kind of work they participate in the survival of their families. The courses of these children’s lives have been determined from the beginning. Because of their poverty, the destructive caste system and the weak Government they often can’t break the cycle.
